Busing was a disaster and horribly unfair. These Dems are going nuts, and I'm one of them

How many years ago was that shit?
Same time trump wasn’t allowing certain “types” in his apartments.

@Pfuzylogic Exactly -- I was bused away from my school in 1977 and 1978. Absurd.

Many living today are absolutely clueless on what the challenges in the 70s, no clue at all.
Joe has been in government that long though. I hope his superior qualifications don’t disqualify him.

Not all social experiments succeed, and it seems that busing created many problems while trying to solve one. I think Biden could easily have dodged a direct hit on this had he not flaunted the fact that he worked with segregationists to reinforce segregation, which is exactly how this is playing out. He could have pointed out that it was discontinued and regarded as an overall failed experiment while acknowledging that it may have helped some individuals as well. When he falls back on a states rights argument, it comes across as disingenuous, because the only time national politicians in either party use the argument is when they’re looking for an escape hatch on an issue they’d rather not take a position on. That said, the Democrats are in trouble if 1970’s school busing policy continues to consume more oxygen than current issues.

This is an example of evolving social policy. Just like "don't ask, don't tell," it was the best that could be done for the time. Bussing was very controversial and there were arguments on all sides. We're collectively smarter now.

Busing out of Berkeley CA was not like busing in the South. Sorry Harris, not buying your poor little girl bused story. You weren't from the projects.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@HannahSky Actually, I lived in Los Angels during much of the bussing age. It was volatile, filled with bias and an ever-present issue even for small children. Protests were common and if you think there's no racism in Ca., you are dead wrong.

@Graylight That's LA. Not Berkeley. My point is that it was not exactly the same as how awful it was in the South, in Berkeley. Much smaller community and different area of the state compared to LA. I know Berkley. She also never claimed it was a nightmare for her, like it was for many kids and families. She effectively used her experience, but Harris wants to paint a picture of something she didn't quite experience in the same way. Not saying it was a breeze. But how many years did she bus before moving to Canada or did she bus after Canada? When did I ever say there wasn't racism in CA? I didn't. I live in CA. I'm well aware of the racism and struggles people have here.

@HannahSky Look, I'm not angling for a fight. I'm merely suggesting it's hard to guage how any region so far away experienced something.

Getting some popcorn. This should be good.
