Is Boris Johnson the British Trump?

I've heard this said by people and there kind of is some truth in it though of course there are differences.

Trump is a very American archetype and Johnson is a very English one. The American is a walking cliche of the brash and flashy business tycoon whereas Johnson is a walking cliche of something closer to home. He's a 'toff' and a 'cad'. The posh-boy who never grew up who is entertaining but utterly flakey and unreliable. So no, not the sort of person you would think qualified to be PM and yes, this has been said before.

Johnson's career has been the very definition of failing upwards. He got fired from his newspaper job for lying, got recorded organising to beat up a journalist, was a national embarrassment as a Foreign Secretary but he is likely to be the next leader of our country. Every time he's failed, a combination of charisma, contacts and class privilege helped him survive and go to the next level.

His one reasonable job was as mayor of London, where he ran the city (or his advisors did!) as a liberal conservative. Since then, he's hitched his banner to the populist-right bandwagon that is Brexit, for no other reason than he thought it would benefit his career. Unfortunately, he's set to be proven correct but at great cost to the country. Its well known he's coveted leadership for a long time but he's driven by ego and not principle. He claims to be in favour of a no-deal Brexit.

Is that where we are in the world right now ?
Electing egos rather than Statesmen ?

Dodgy businessmen and schoolboys who never grew up ?
Those without the first clue but can shout a good rallying call ?

Where are the business people and Economists standing tall to rebut this nonsense ?
Where are the party grandees foaming at the mouth because these characters are representing their respective party's ?
Why aren't the Bankers screaming loud and long at these pantomime Dames publicly to embarrass them into either retreat or action ?

We've gone from 'Documentary' to 'Mockumentary' in three years ! It's like a live soap opera. Ridiculous.

They look like they perhaps share a hairdresser!

@RubySoo That too LOL
@RubySoo I think that's one reason Trump likes him. 🤭

They're both conmen (like most populists) , so they do have that in common. But whereas Boris is genial and can be quite funny , Trump is simply mean and nasty. One of life's great mysteries is how both of these privileged fools have somehow manage to cultivate a 'man of the people' persona. Nothing could be further from the truth.

I dont care for Boris or Trump.
They'll look like bookends together!

@RubySoo I hope that gets the BA. It would if this was my question. Lol :)

There goes the neighbourhood

I just hope all these a—hole leaders, all over the world, get kicked out soon. When are the world’s citizens going to stop letting a—holes be in charge?
Johnson and Trump are bad enough on their own. The two leading their respective nations at the same time is kind of terrifying. Now all we need is for Zhirinovsky to beat Putin.

He's played a blinder to be fair. He could have had the job after the referendum but he knew the promises he made regarding Brexit were almost impossible to keep. So he patiently waited for the chance to step in and try to be the night in shining armour.

I can't see any one on either side being a good leader for us. Historically my family and people in my county would vote Labour but I have no confidence in Labour or Corbyn and I'm no Corbyn hater by the way..

Let the games begin 🙈

@SW-User I'm a corbyn fan but I know a lot of Labour supporters are saying this. He and we need to buck up cos Labour is the only party which can stop this.

Boris just supports whatever gets him to power quickest. In this incarnation he’s a no deal brexiteer. So he has my support, just with a touch of caution.

I think he’ll be good for brexit and foreign relations, getting trade deals. I think his domestic policy will probably be pretty wet. I see that Steve Baker backs him, and the prospect of him becoming chancellor would be amazing, but not very likely.
No...since Boris came first, Trump is the American Boris.
@bijouxbroussard lol... you're right. He was quite known to the American people. But if we compare him to Boris, I think it's only befitting that we give respect where it's due.
@Vivaci "Respect" ? Neither sound particularly respectable, based upon their histories.🤔
@bijouxbroussard Lol...true!! I meant respecting the period of their political career and that seniority. Not them. 🤗
Seems pretty accurate.

Sort of, except that Boris is American as well.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@TheJagsman Lol :)
@Crazychick I believe it was for tax reasons. With dual citizenship you have to file.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard I should have guessed.
He did bring in the Boris bike .... and erm... yeah the boris bike

I am stunned that people didn't see this coming.

@InOtterWords It comes to something given how much I hated Gove as education secretary but I want him to win. In this contest he is a relative moderate and there would be less chance of a no deal Brexit. Give is right wing and a shyster but he's a pragmatist in this sense.

I never thought I'd say this but he's the lesser evil.
@Burnley123 I don't need to tell you but he is the reason the kids don't read American authors in schools

It will.all work out in the end....its what I keep.telling myself
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@InOtterWords Yes, I could go on all day about what he did as education secretary. I'd rather have literally anyone else in that role

When in charge of prisons he was a moderate because he does believe in rehabilitation. As environment secretary, he listened to the farmers Union and did his research, which softened his Brexit position.

Don't get me wrong, I do not like this man or his politics but he's more moderate and more reliable than Johnson. He's the best chance if stopping no deal from within the Conservative but after today, his chances are slim.

I'm all for Brexit, now.
