What do you call a country that if you don't vote in politics you get a fine of $20:00?

I just did and my excuse was the voting place was shut. In Australia by the way

I was sick with the flu once and didn't vote. I just wrote them a letter and didn't have to pay the fine.

While i don't like most things that are compulsory, the benefit to compulsory voting as i see it is that it prevents the influence of the few who participate in the election results becoming too strong and gives better representation to certain areas. Also according to stats that i've read, a high turnout reduces the financial expenditure for election campaigns. Our election campaigns are also very short.

The downside is that some consider being forced to vote a violation of personal freedoms. Some people also see not voting as a political statement which would be taken away if forced to vote.

OMG That needs to be investigated by the media and made known to everyone
SW-User
@SW-User Well i'm going to do that if they persist with it. I really dislike that they are allowed to sell debts to debt collection agencies. This should be illegal as the agencies have none of the facts to do with the original fine yet can just hound anyone without the facts.

Well this really needs exposing

@SW-User When I visited, it seemed like a lovely country with a high standard of living. A lot of people seem to be able to make a healthy living over there.
SW-User
@QuixoticSoul It won't last. Wait till China owns half of Australia. Some people are making money by selling up to the Chinese. We don't even have a car manufacturing industry here
anymore. we GMH Ford Toyota ..all gone

Well in Australia we have 2 governments and it doesn't matter which is voted in as neither can govern this once nice country. I'm actually wishing the Japanese had taken over this country in ww2 its become so bad here. We don't even make cars here anymore!

Well, I think it makes sure that a lot of idiots vote. That won't look good. Having said that, if you absolutely must vote, you're likely to do more research. I think 馃

That's the real fascism, forced participation in the government procedures
SW-User
@Jackaloftheazuresand We need a revolution here. I'm gonna start by fighting my fine
Jackaloftheazuresand26-30, M
@SW-User Indeed, I think the world needs a revolution. I truly hope you win.
Well Australia is a 3rd world country, maybe they need the money
SW-User
@Marta Money, what's that?
SW-User
Only 20 dollars. I鈥檓 pretty sure I had to pay 50 when I got fined. 馃槧
SW-User
@SW-User do you live here as well?
midnightroseF
I don't know, doesn't seem right though.
SW-User

thats funny.

Rather than fine people for not voting, the government should reward people who show up to vote... give them $100 for gas money, cash and tax-free just to show up and vote.

@swirlie Yep. We have the red light cameras. and sometimes paired with a speed camera to see if you speed up to run the light. They will hit you twice. Now add cameras in police cars with plate recognition that can track a car for being stolen, having outstanding fines, or even being unregistered with a couple of seconds and alarm the police driver who can give chase.

In Canada, you can go 20 km over the limit before the fines kick in. At 20 over, the fine is around $200, then it goes up. At 50km over the limit, your car is impounded for 7 days and your driver's license is suspended until you do the written test and road test as described, which of course is penance. Quite frankly, I would rather the cops just do a roadside spanking and avoid all the paperwork.

Wow! That is amazing too!

A technology I just learned about in Canada involves the use of a computer chip embedded within a car's onboard computer system. It uses GPS to make itself detectable via police GPS monitoring.

For example, if your car is involved in a robbery and someone gets your license plate number from your car, which is assuming that your car is suitable enough to act as the getaway car for the sake of my illustration, the police can then locate the exact position of your car by entering your vehicle's license plate number into their computer and they can locate your car as long as the engine is running in YOUR car.

Your vehicle can leave the country yet be located via satellite, whereby local law enforcement agencies are merely contacted and a police car is dispatched to intercept your car as it passes through their area of jurisdiction. There are no longer any high speed, tear-ass take-downs on the highway like the good old days!

I would call that a country which undervalues the value of a 'vote'. Truth is, the fine should be $1000.00
swirlie31-35, F
@SW-User

"hey paying insurance is one thing being told that you must vote or we fine you is something else. Citizens have the right to decide what they want to do"

But hey, if a citizen is not prepared to support the society they choose to live in, then the government will make that decision for them. Is that how you would prefer to live?
SW-User
@swirlie l support society I just don't support any choices we have in any of our governments
swirlie31-35, F
@SW-User

Perhaps if you ran for some government position, you would have someone to vote for!
