Why not make it that only Veterans can run for any office?

There are a number of newly elected Veterans coming into congress. There are enough women in the forces now to represent their views. Why not simply make it a rule that only Vets can nominate, proving that you have already given your country real service seems a damned good way to improve the breed to me.
(I can't claim this as my idea. Robert Heinlein proposed "Federal Service"as a prerequisite for politics in "Starship Troopers")

For that you would have to change the constitution ( not easy ) and it wouldn´t be fair to those who cannot serve in the army.

How about electing a President that actually respects those who have served, unlike the orange clown you have currently in office ?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Underconstruction Absolutely. And who better to respect that service than a comrade in arms.?
@whowasthatmaskedman You don´t have to be a vet to appreciate their service.
St0ut · 51-55, M
Because that would be unamerican and unconstitutional
TheProphet · M
Being a veteran doesn't make you a good leader.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@TheProphet Not always. But it eliminates some self service cowards. I am just looking to improve the odds
TheProphet · M
@whowasthatmaskedman I'm for good candidates regardless of service.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@TheProphet And I have no doubt your way will continue. I am simply suggesting a way to make other candidates better.
There are many good people who were not Veterans. Though my father was in WW2 and received many medals.
luv2fly352 · 70-79, M
@JustLikeGreta I'm a disabled veteran of two military conflicts and i agree.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@JustLikeGreta I contend that you need the best people in those jobs. Those who want the job will be prepared to serve. Of course this is not a fix all. But it has to improve the average. I am sure your Father would have taken the role with dignity and done better than many you have now.
@whowasthatmaskedman My Dad hated the military and hated politics even more. whereby my hubby never served and loved politics. and World History, etc. And was a good man inspite of never serving.
How about forcing them to offer up a mix of people from different backgrounds so that you have a more equal mix of rich and poor people... that should go a good way to making the system fairer to everyone as opposed to just those that can pay for affiliation.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@HootyTheNightOwl That is an option. But there is no guarantee the scum would not rise to the surface with those groups as it has in the current system. I am looking for a way to improve the average, possibly by removing a moral deficit or two.
@whowasthatmaskedman Whenever you have a group of people, you'll never prevent the possibility of cliques forming simply because of the fact that we know that there's greater safety in numbers - even in politics there's a good chance that people are voting for what everyone else wants rather than choosing the policy that they feel is in the best interests of the country as a whole.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@HootyTheNightOwl I completely agree. But there is something in Military training about duty to your nation and community. Hopeful, self interest and safety can be looked past.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
....Like Oliver North ?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Picklebobble2 Or Kennedy?and Eisenhower
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
It's a really bad idea. Military governments don't have a great rep.

Even if it was a democracy, you would only be picking people from one profession. Military spending would be unlikely to ever go down.
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
I'm not sure that being a vet qualifies anyone for anything beyond being a vet.
St0ut · 51-55, M
You could however suggest that for your own country just saying
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@St0ut Yes. I could.. and would. We have more than our fair share of weaseley lawyers and accountants and PR people in Parliament as well. What we dont have is a proud tradition of military service in the community. Something to be admired in America, then largely wasted.
I love Heinlein, but his politics were always a bit wacky, and I don't think this one was a good idea.
hertoy · 70-79, M
That's not a bad idea...
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Lol service guarantees citizenship! 😂

No thanks, Heinlein’s foray into fascism is not my style.
TexChik · F
I think going back to tax payers only would resolve the issue . Thst would wipe out the liberal minions , leaving only the Uber rich
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@TexChik Lmao, the “progressive activist” sector of the electorate is the one that’s most likely to have six figure incomes 😂
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@TexChik I think only transgender asylum seekers should be allowed to run.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Burnley123 At least they would be interested enough to turn up to vote.
so the guy that shot up that nightclub in 1000 oaks.
he'd be able to run
Nor would Ron Helus the deputy killed that night.

and yr president would not be able to be president,

I served, as did my entire family for generations leading back to the colonial time.

the military is as full of idoits and assholes as the rest of our world

this is a terrible idea.

id rather we just chose at random, from law abiding people
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@plaguewatcher I dont remember case where a person qualified for anything By "becoming white" although some do convert religions. And I wouldnt advocate revoving any current member (no matter how tempting) Just require all nominees to show an honourable discharge. Call it a character reference to their willingness to serve.
@whowasthatmaskedman that shooter had an honorable discharge
so hows that proof?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@plaguewatcher I also believe that shooter had issues he tried to get help for but couldnt. (I stand to be corrected on that) If that is so. Maybe having a congressman who had some empathy might have turned the whole thing.
I guess you haven't read our const. -
@whowasthatmaskedman Sorry I was getting my stress headache -
You do know that you just can't amend the constitution like you change underwear -right ? The ERA as been on the back burners for years and I dont believe it is an change to the const. So your suggestion is ok but just a suggestion.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MarmeeMarch And thats all it ever will be.. I get that. But you have to start somewhere. Looking past Trump as am issue, America cant go on like this forever.
@whowasthatmaskedman well there could be changes , never know
JonathanC · 61-69, M
Fortunately for the country, this will never happen.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
you have that option every election
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@MarineBob I dont think an "option" is good enough. I think you need every seat in congress, the senate and the White house. (Lets throw in the Governors Mansions et all) filled with someone who is prepared to put their @$$ on the line for the people.
That would severely limit its representation of the people whom it governed, especially other ideologies and women’s rights, even more than it already does. And, no, a majority of women in the military are conservative and don’t represent all of our interests. I would never support that.
