Why not make it that only Veterans can run for any office?

There are a number of newly elected Veterans coming into congress. There are enough women in the forces now to represent their views. Why not simply make it a rule that only Vets can nominate, proving that you have already given your country real service seems a damned good way to improve the breed to me.
(I can't claim this as my idea. Robert Heinlein proposed "Federal Service"as a prerequisite for politics in "Starship Troopers")

Being a veteran doesn't make you a good leader.

@TheProphet No. Nor does it make the electorate good followers. I just want to improve the odds of getting Representatives who care about community and nation above their own interests.

@whowasthatmaskedman No reason they are any more patriotic than any other candidate.
@whowasthatmaskedman Look at our greatest president in the 20th century Ronald Reagan - he did not serve because of hearing problems but made films for the military.

@TheProphet Its not about patriotism. Its about willingness to put others first,

@MarmeeMarch I wont get into the politics of an individual. For good or bad. Who is to say Jimmy Stewart wouldnt have done better if he has run?

@whowasthatmaskedman You don't have to be a veteran to put others first and being a veteran doesn't always make you a good person.
@whowasthatmaskedman Maybe he would do well - but I do like his acting and maybe he felt that entertainment was a way for people not to think of the war for a couple of hours. I would say that falls into putting others first.

@TheProphet Not always. But it eliminates some self service cowards. I am just looking to improve the odds

@whowasthatmaskedman I'm for good candidates regardless of service.

@TheProphet And I have no doubt your way will continue. I am simply suggesting a way to make other candidates better.
