Why not make it that only Veterans can run for any office?

There are a number of newly elected Veterans coming into congress. There are enough women in the forces now to represent their views. Why not simply make it a rule that only Vets can nominate, proving that you have already given your country real service seems a damned good way to improve the breed to me.
(I can't claim this as my idea. Robert Heinlein proposed "Federal Service"as a prerequisite for politics in "Starship Troopers")

There are many good people who were not Veterans. Though my father was in WW2 and received many medals.

@JustLikeGreta I contend that you need the best people in those jobs. Those who want the job will be prepared to serve. Of course this is not a fix all. But it has to improve the average. I am sure your Father would have taken the role with dignity and done better than many you have now.
@whowasthatmaskedman My Dad hated the military and hated politics even more. whereby my hubby never served and loved politics. and World History, etc. And was a good man inspite of never serving.
