So why exactly is Trump having a summit meeting with Putin ?

"This is a summit about appeasement and we should be terrified that Trump is going to sell out America and its allies.Any other President — Republican or Democrat — would use this summit to confront Russia for its on-going attack on our democracy, for its illegal occupation of Crimea and invasion of eastern Ukraine, for its efforts to assassinate people using chemical weapons in the U.K., and for its backing of [Syrian President Bashar al-]Assad. We should be confronting Russia and redrawing clear red lines, not trying to cut any deals because the only deal to be had is one where Russia agrees to completely change its behavior. That's not going to happen." - Max Bergmann of the Center for American Progress.

"If Trump really were a Russian asset, it's hard to think what else he could do to rupture the Western alliance, diminish U.S. influence, undercut democratic government and human rights, boost Russia's leverage in the Middle East and give Putin a green light to manipulate our elections with impunity." - Jennifer Rubin , WaPo.

Remember the Prime Directive: It is all about Trump, all the time, in every way. The summit is about Trump. He's petrified that evidence of his crimes is going to come out, and he desperately needs to ensure that the Russians will not release the pee tape or other compromising information that will give credence to Mueller's report. He needs that reassurance from Putin. This has nothing to do with benefiting the country or our allies. He's already sold those out.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@windinhishair We are fast approaching a situation where the US is going to be considered a hostile power by the Europeans.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@RodionRomanovitch Yes, and if we are subject to sanctions by the rest of the world, I cannot say that I blame them in any way.
Ynotisay · M
Yesterday he said, in essence, he was taking the Russians word that they didn't meddle and try to impact our election. Yet every investigative bureau in the country disagrees.
I can't imagine there being any more of a clear sign that this man is involved in things we know nothing about. Yet.
To willingly side with an enemy, and to pretty much be alone on that island, should be more than enough for a big wake up call.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Ynotisay I couldn't believe he actually repeated that again.
Ynotisay · M
@RodionRomanovitch Me too. It was telling.
HerKing · 61-69, M
Wouldn't it be fun if Trump asked Putin for immunity the way Edward Snowden has?
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Snowden is a traitor and the information he put into the public domain was good for mankind. Quite the dilemma. @MartinII
HerKing · 61-69, M
@MartinII I agree. What is Trump after he (on the suggestion of Putin; Who else) had the Russian ambassador and foreign minister in the Oval office and told them both about a deep cover MOSAD agent in the Middle East who was relaying back vital intel to the western spooks. Oh, and although the Russian press were invited, the US press wasn't.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@MartinII 'Trump, whatever you might think of him, is not a traitor.'

The whole premise of this question is that he is. I've heard nothing yet to dissuade me.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Russians have been outmaneuvering us on the geopolitical stage for years. Frankly, a detente wouldn't be such a bad idea. We've picked our battles with them quite poorly, and it's done absolutely nothing for us - or those we've backed.

I'm no fan of Trump, but we've tried to get tough on Russia for quite some time with only counterproductive results. This is overdue.
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@RodionRomanovitch Yes, sanction relief will be our chief carrot in whatever discussions will happen. And certainly, what exactly we'll be looking to get from the Russians is the big question here.

With Bolton's visibility in all of this, I am concerned that this is groundwork for some kind of escalation with Iran. If that would come to pass, we'd really like the Russians to sit it out, and limit their S-300 deliveries.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@QuixoticSoul As credible as it sounds , I really do hope you are wrong about Iran.
Northwest · M
@RodionRomanovitch John Boulton has never been right, not once, about foreign policy. He's pushing for an invasion of Iran, or an aggressive regime change move.

The trouble is, GOP voters, in general, have no clue, when it comes to foreign policy, so he gets away with the Iraq war, creating the refugee mess, and generally speaking, fucking up the world. What the GOP voters see: Obama did it.

This morning, Trump "called" the Saudi King, and ordered him to increase oil production by 2M barrels per day. Trump said that this is because of the turmoil in Iran and Venezuela. The GOP voters, will blame Iran and Venezuela. In reality, we placed sanctions against these countries, effectively blocking them from selling oil.

Iran is too strategic of an asset to Iran, and Putin is not going to play ball on this.
I'm pretty sure everyone who doesn't think Trump is taking orders from Putin or drink Trump's koolaid thinks there's a risk Putin will end up playing Trump like a fool and walk away with stuff he wants in exchange for stuff that either hurts us, or at least lines Trump's pockets personally.

Hopefully, Trump's wing it routine like he did with Kim is just an act, or he'll suddenly start taking the job a bit more seriously, but I kind of doubt it. Trump seems to idolize Putin and Kim way too much for that, and it kind of makes sense, when you think about it. Trump's new brand of crony capitalism is nothing compared to the operation Putin has running in Russia, and my guess is Trump will go into the meetings and take notes.

One of those notes may say something like "I asked about interfering, and he said, no, so I believe him" or something, but I wouldn't expect anything more from Russia than vague assurances like we got with Kim, in exchange for concessions from Trump, which may well be more than he's legally entitled to give.

I do hope I'm wrong.

Trump, at the last G7 meeting, drove a stake into the heart of the “Western Alliance”, and signaled that he wanted a G8.

The only head of state he appealed to, is the head of the bankrupt Italian State.

He sees a soulmate in Putin.

Most importantly, it is about Trump. It is the Trump show, 24/7

MartinII · 70-79, M
Perhaps he just thinks it’s good to talk to people. Putin may be an unpleasant person, but it’s not obvious that he is an enemy of the US. Similarly, Trump may be an unpleasant person, but it’s not obvious that he is, or should be, an enemy of Russia. And of course, if he were Obama, everyone would be saying how wonderful he was.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@RodionRomanovitch You make assertions as if they were facts. Some people consider Russia to be a hostile power, some don’t. Among those who think Russia is, or might be, hostile, some think the US should engage with Russia, some don’t. Throughout history nations have talked to actual or potential enemies, while others have ignored them or fought wars with them - sometimes successfully, sometimes not, in all cases!
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@MartinII I have asserted nothing. Try asking the intelligence chiefs , the generals and almost everybody in Congress whether they consider Russia to be a friend or a foe. And , of course, engaging with them is not necessarily a bad thing .... but it is the motives for doing so that both interest ,and alarm , me and others.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@RodionRomanovitch Your posts are full of assertions. Just read them!

I’m pretty sure that most intelligence chiefs, generals and relevant members of the cabinet would give a nuanced answer to your question. No doubt there are many views in Congress, and some Democrats will be influenced by their belief that Russian intervention had a decisive impact on tbe Presidential election. As to your last sentence, I agree with you.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
To receive his latest set of orders -- and maybe a little Putin something up his butt on the side?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@ChipmunkErnie And maybe he needs to get away from the White House before he spills any more classified secrets to them.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
Typical drivel from folks that will never do anything but complain about the doings of others, while never accepting responsibility for their words.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@sunsporter1649 You mean like Trump ?
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Putin chafes at Russia being ostracized from the world community. Bringing him into the tent even a little bit will have positive effects.
HerKing · 61-69, M
@jackjjackson
if the President is involved it must be wrong (knee jerk non thinking reaction)
Trump would need to make dramatic (and likely impossible) changes to his attitude to both the adversaries and allies of the US before he convinced thinking people he wasn't a stooge for Putin.

I can't imagine the hysterics that Putin's close circle of officials have when Trump says nice stuff about Putin and Putin just returns a smirk.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
I get it. You don’t support the president. @Northwest

You're projecting, with your blind support for Trump.

Unlike you, I consider every single position, or proposed position, on its merits.

We just folded on Dara'a, with absolutely nothing in return.

How is the issue between Russia and Ukraine attacking American democracy?

Shouldn't the world ask the very questions, why is America interfering in other countries issues?
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@Random1Thoughts 'How is the issue between Russia and Ukraine attacking American democracy?' - it isn't but meddling in your election is.
Ynotisay · M
@Random1Thoughts That's not what the quote stated. Those were separate issues.
cycleman · 61-69, M
so all the confusing talk created by staff and party members and opposition too, will get the general public attention away from what is really being worked out, if anything at all.

Photo op to distract us, just like his meeting with the Kimster.
@hunkalove It doesn't distract to meet with Putin in private---it bolsters the idea that there must be a huge reason they don't want us to know about for why the two MUST have this meeting in private.

Trump is completely embroiled in an investigation to determine what kind of hold Putin has on him--yet further meetings with Putin is soooooooooooo important to Trump that no matter how it looks--he's got to be alone with Putin anyway.

If you knew the FBI and half a dozen other IT agencies were trying to find enough to impeach you for playing ball--a treasonous game of ball with Russia behind the scenes---wouldn't you do your best to distance yourself from Putin, Putin, Putin--instead of DEMANDING to be allowed to meet with him behind closed doors? Whatever Trump has to say to Putin--give to Putin in the way of U.S. government classified information---or whatever it is must have a huge payoff for trump---to cause him so much backlash and suspicion--and further investigations----for doing this. Everything points to Putin owning our president---completely.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@anythingoes477 I couldn't agree more. He's upto his eyes in it.
