How could such a tragedy happen after the last time that Congress did absolutely nothing to prevent it ?

Pherick · 41-45, M
Hey remember, a crazy person just recently shot up the Congressional baseball team. That NRA money is just TOOO good to even think about doing anything, even when their own are targets.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Let’s suppose the NRA was closed and the selling of new guns stopped. How many guns exist and what would could should be done about them? @Pherick
Pherick · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson According to the sources I found we have about 300 million guns in the US. Almost one for every man, woman, and child in the country.

What do about them? Let people keep them? I don't have any interest in taking guns from law-abiding people. I would like all guns used in crimes to be destroyed, not recycled back into the population.

Then I wouldn't mind making illegal some of the accessories that can turn "normal" rifles into militaristic looking and acting ones.

Also stricter laws for how guns are kept in the house. Your gun is your responsibility, you need to secure it. If I break into your house and your gun is sitting on your bedside table, then what I do with it afterward is your responsibility to some extent.
I muted Trump this morning, because it's such utter bs. They don't give a damn. They're saying the same crap every single time it happens and then they block any legislation that could possibly stop it from happening, while making excuses about "gun control contributing to mass shootings". That was proven a lie in Nevada, a state with virtually NO gun control. And with yesterday, how many shootings have there been in the great "Stand Your Ground" state of Florida ? Trump, the gun lobby and NRA supporters can freaking keep their "prayers and sympathy"---they obviously don't mean a word of it. 😞

@bijouxbroussard
when the shooter is a kid it makes me even sadder... Because I get conflicting feelings towards him.. hate and angry feelings for wasting innocent lives but also sad feelings that the adults surrounding him didn't do their job.
@BitterSweetPotato And he bought the gun legally. That’s the thing. He passed the background check. Another thing; the police took him in alive. The same police who “fear for their lives” when they encounter unarmed black people at traffic stops had no trouble bringing in a kid who’d just murdered 17 people, without harming a hair on his head. Surreal.
BitterSweetPotato · 31-35, F
@bijouxbroussard And apparently the shooter left a comment on YouTube earlier saying that he wanted to be a "professional school shooter" and the FBI could not reach the identity of the person who commented! You would think the FBI has more capabilities than that! He commented under the same name, It only makes me wonder whether they've given it any importance.. I mean had it been the case, the 17 people would be alive today, specially with all the school shootings that have been taking place, you would think they'd keep their eyes wide open for such indications of more possible shootings.

"Now is not the time to talk about it. We shouldn't politicize the issue. We should send our prayers to the family."
And on and on and on...
They didn't even get anything done over bump stocks. Because 'Murica. And because Freedom!
@Ynotisay 👆 This
Gee, I wonder the same 🤔

Maybe it's God's plan for 'Murica.
If the coach who gave his life would have been armed everything would be fine. It's not the guns. It's a sick culture and a sick society. Otherwise there would have been school shootings in the 19th century. Things were different when everyone had guns long ago. They had a moral compass then, and discipline.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@puck61 I think we can agree that it was an horrific incident that has become all too common. So what is the solution? It can't be more guns. Why can't we have universal gun checks? Outlawing bump stocks? Mandating smaller magazines? Grandfathering in existing gun owners and outlawing future sales of assault weapons? Wouldn't preventing just one future mass killing be worth it?

There has to be some common ground for people like you and I on either side of the issue.
@windinhishair Probably not. Stricter background checks and more mental health awareness is about as far as I can go on this. A gun is just tool or a toy. It can do nothing on it's own.
windinhishair · 61-69, M
@puck61 I am convinced that unless and until we ban assault weapons again, the killings of children and others will go on and on and on and on and on and on.......

A nuclear weapon is also a tool and can do nothing on its own.

Universal background checks would be a start. We can agree on that.

I wonder what would happen if a bunch of politicians kids were gunned down?
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Picklebobble2 No... The private schools are populated by kids who will never know what its like to want for anything. And already have a common enemy to join together again.. The regular people..
Ynotisay · M
@whowasthatmaskedman Probably similar to what happens when an anti-gay politician finds out their kid is gay.
hlpflwthat · M
@Picklebobble2 I do know that 100% of the young boys in my town who were raped at their school by priests did attend private school.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Virtually every other type of government building is guarded on the upside and inside by security personal and replete with cameras. Why don’t schools get the same protection as courthouses?
Ikr. Have to wonder what would happen if someone threatened the lives of the NRA stooges see if things change then
And how is Congress supposed to fix it?

The FL shooter was reported to agencies and it still happened. They had much better chance to stop it that Congress.
@Pherick interesting idea. Please remind me, when was last time someone burst into a movie theater, school or home and started injecting people with drugs? 🤔
Pherick · 41-45, M
@VeronicaJane Well if they had tried, everyone could have just injected themselves with their own drugs and the day would have been saved!
@Pherick Thank you, it’s the same kind of logic—“why should anything be illegal because criminals will just break the law anyway !” 😳

I think this is adding to the apathy that we're seeing when these things happen now and it's really sad.
