Are you a classical liberal?

Why or why not?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
Most Americans won't know what it means because to them political liberalism is the mainstream left

Classical liberalism is free market economic policy and being pro personal freedom. It's having a Liberal attitude to both. I.e. Soft libertarian capitalist.

I'm a socialist myself because I support personal freedom and see the free market as producing less freedom (for the majority) of individuals when left unconstrained. The only thing that can prevent that is a strong, democratic and interventionist state.

no, I am pro-life
antisocialbutterfly · 22-25, F
I am against war and the death penalty . Thank you very much . There’s absolutely nothing wrong with believing that life is sacred. Also , there’s a high chance I can’t have kids of my own and it saddens me to think that women would rather throw away a child than give it up for adoption to allow an infertile woman who wants to be a mother the opportunity to love the child.

@antisocialbutterfly You are actually pro-life then. I can definitely respect that.
antisocialbutterfly · 22-25, F
I am pro life but I don’t believe that a woman should have to raise a child that she doesn’t want to raise... give it to a woman who can’t have her own...

What the hell is that? A liberal made out of a greek statue?
33person · 26-30, M
@SW-User It's basically someone who wants limited government, which means marry who you want, pro-choice, but right-leaning on economics, just not as extreme as American Libertarians or anarcho-capitalists.

@33person oh... do they play classical music at least?
33person · 26-30, M
@SW-User I'm sure some do.

I'm a liberal, the best liberal, you've never seen someone as liberal as me. I know the best liberal words....
Alabamarednek · 36-40, M
Not liberal nor conservative. I love my guns and God and don't judge how others view God or other religion's.

There is only one race and it's the human race.

Although I love my guns, it's a little fucked up that its easier for felons to get guns then it is for a 10 year old to buy smokes and booze. And I'm no fan of selling smokes and booze to kids either.

@Alabamarednek Any views on economic issues?
Alabamarednek · 36-40, M
Yes. I'm not a sucker who glamorize the Donald thugs out there for being wealthy. The super rich has been wagging well rounded class warfare against the non wealthy since the beginning of time. Even in the days of Christ.

In fact it was his highly respected stance against the pat Robertsons, Joal Osteens, and the Trumps and Clintons of the day that led to his crucifixion. His upset of the economic status quo with the weight of his followers made the monarchs and oligarchs of the time feel threatened. Dr. King though he was most known and admired for his stance on bigotry and discrimination had the same characteristics that ultimately led to his assassination.

why do we need labels out all? Like @bijouxbroussard I agree with her views. And yet, I also believe that live and let live makes for a more peaceful living environment. In some areas I am conservative, ie: I believe in the conservation of our finite elements, earth, air, water. And I'm liberal with kindness, compassion, and understanding. We all have our story to tell, we are all in this mess together.

Not quite. I'm very liberal socially and fully support freedoms so long as they don't detract from others' freedoms. I support capitalism and the free market but believe societies must impose some constraints to protect the vulnerable and ensure the best balance for everyone. Obvious examples of that include education, healthcare, and ensuring we don't allow people to slide into a poverty trap.

A classical liberal is what we would call now a “free market conservative.” I am more of a Peacenik Environmentalist liberal.
I guess it depends on what you mean by "classical liberal".

Do you mean "classical liberal" like Austrian school libertarian capitalists?

Or do you mean "classical liberal" like "those good old Bill Clinton days"?

Do you mean "classical liberal" like Hayek and von Mises? or like Al Gore and James Carville?
33person · 26-30, M
@CopperCicada I mean the first one.
@33person Well, I'm highly sympathetic to the view and have studied the Austrian school patriarchs.

I'm pragmatic and in American politics there seems to be no place for it. Libertarians and conservative Republicans are both indifferent to it.

Not completely. I support individualism, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and a free press; free trade and a free market, I support the Constitution and the rule of law. I do, however see the Constitution as adaptable only because of things the founders could never have anticipated in terms of our changing social environment. Likewise, the federal government has historically intervened in cases where "state's rights" would've allowed individual states to behave as fiefdoms, disenfranchising different groups of citizens at will.
