Should american law permit you to have a gun if -

You have a mental illness?
You murdered someone, but have served your prison term?
You have been convicted of beating someone up?
You have not been trained how to use a gun?
You were kicked out of the armed forces?
You have a Similar Worlds account
You have an aggressive nature?
You are or have been an alcoholic?
You go by the name Jimmy the Gun?
I have a neighbor who is aggressive and violent. Threatens people with his weapons and discharges them illegally. He's mentally ill and struggling with addiction.

The vast majority of people IRL and on SW seem to think this is normal and acceptable and we're all fascists for wanting to stop him.
Bigrobbie · 56-60, M
@CopperCicada He has to be stopped.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
You can enact all the laws you want. Criminals don't follow the law.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Pherick Do you honestly think that shooting through walls is an effective way of killing people? Not too long ago a would be church killer was stopped by an armed parishioner. I don't remember if the erstwhile gunner survived or not.
Pherick · 41-45, M
@hippyjoe1955 So now we are arguing over what is the most efficient way to kill people? How fucked up are you man?

Done here, enjoy.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@Pherick No I am laughing at you since you said the shooter could have stood outside and shot through the walls. I guess you have never shot a rifle in your life or you would know that firing blind is not a good way to kill nor is shooting through a wall since most if not all of the energy in the bullet would be absorbed by the wall.

Here in my state, to purchase a gun you can either:

A). Go purchase it at a shop. They do background checks and no one with a felony or a class A misdemeanor is allowed to have one- So, "gun control" here is pointless. There's no problem.

B). One can purchase weapons from a private seller like at a gun show or your neighbor- here it is not very regulated. So, I'm certain any lunatic with a bad rap is using this route.

Know the facts that making a general law like "gun control" aimed at businesses, or simply restricting the amount of magazines or whatever isn't going work.

People are the problem, and some crazy lunatic is going to use whatever to kill someone else.
Bigrobbie · 56-60, M
@SW-User and people that own loads of guns. Surely this could be controlled. Buying a gun for someone else, I wonder how much this happens?
Graylight · 51-55, F
It depends. A mental illness can by anxiety or phobia and it can be bipolar or antisocial personality. There are varying degrees. Incidentally, those with mental illness have been shown in study after study not to be any more violent than the general public. Gun statistics back that up. And how are you going to identify the dangerously mentally ill? Right now, all we have is a questionnaire filled out by the gun buyer.

Beating someone up doesn't predict gun violence.

No one not trained and regularly tested in the use of firearms should own a gun. Why not give race cars to anyone who thinks they're cool?

Discharge from the military is not predictor of gun violence.

I'm beginning to wonder if many of the people here on SW should own a firearm.

Aggressiveness can be a helpful trait and is no predictor of gun violence.

Recovering alcoholics and drug users are among some of the most even, insightful and straight people I've ever met. And there's no connection between addiction and love of guns.

What would Jimmy the Gun do without his trademark accessory? Just stay clear of him after payday.
Bigrobbie · 56-60, M
@Graylight Beating someone up shows aggression. If you can land a punch, you might shoot a gun.

Anxiety is probably a reason not to be allowed a gun. You need a sound mind in my opinion. Antisocial personality is not a mental illness in my view.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Bigrobbie Fair points. But you can't punish for crimes not yet committed. Those who use their fists haven't, I don't think, been shown to be any more likely to use a gun. Aggression and murder are two different things.

Anxiety is usually debilitating, not provocative. Meaning someone with anxiety is a lot more likely to hide at home than take a gun out to the mall. There's a wide, wide spectrum of mental illness. If we're going to address that issue as a society, I think we need more specific parameters.

I know a guy who is a hunter and target shooter.
He knows that if he ever assaulted his wife, his guns would be gone, and he would be banned from owning firearms for a period of years.

Guns kill and people are stupid.

In my opinion, give em up u die.
Convicted criminals of violent crimes are not allowed to own guns where I live, but I don’t know if that’s still the case in the rest of the country.

@Pherick The question as to whether a man or woman who uses a weapon irresponsibly should have a right to one-- sorts gun enthusiasts from run rights enthusiasts.

The gun rights enthusiast HAS TO SAY the most irresponsible gun user has an absolute right to that weapon. Even the most eggregious cases. That's freedom. If one admits that the prick drawing down on people is wrong, then one creates the pretext for gun regulation. So they HAVE TO SAY that the crazy fuck drawing down, shooting in city limits, etc. is legit.
@Pherick why is being an atheist relevant. hmm...
Pherick · 41-45, M
@CopperCicada Because the Hipster here feels like since I am a leftist and an atheist, I have no morals and I am inherently evil. His god is the only god and everyone else can go fuck themselves :)

So we disagree on that :)
