What's your advice on moving for the first time?

I recently got a job after years of moving back home with my parents after college, and it's always been my dream to move out of the poor rural town I live into a major city, and find work that uses my degree. As someone who never rented an apartment before, I lived in the dorms on campus, how much money should I save up to follow my dreams? The sooner I move out the better, because I hate living in the small town I really don't fit in here.
Dreaming is great - but planning is as important.

Decide where you'd LIKE to live. What size city, what's important to you (sports, music, libraries, etc).

Then research cost of living, housing availability, etc.

Save as much as you can. You'll rarely have more than you need. Don't buy anything that would be a problem to move.

Have at least 3 months of rent in reserve. A good way to determine what that amount is to look at apartments in the city you desire online to get an idea of what rent will be as it varies quite a lot by city.
I mean it depends on a lot of factors. You want to be able to afford furniture, appliances, maybe a month worth of toiletries and other sundries. You'll need your first and last month's rent of course and wherever you rent should take no more 1/3 of your monthly income. You'll still a want a couple thousand in the bank as well when everything is said and done.
