Question for those of you who like getting gifts and especially those that like to give them

How do I choose one?

So, a friend (an ex-friend?) of mine is really good with gifts, takes a lot of work, time and brainstorming into it. I on the other hand, don't see them as something that "sparks joy". So I suck at choosing and giving them. Whether we're friends or not and what is going to happen is still uncertain but she's been a dear friend of mine for years and considering how much time and effort she took with each gift these past few years, I feel like I owe her at least one that I thought through.

Any ideas? What can I focus on?

I like to get people foreign snacks and novelty items. This year, I got my sister Japanese sodas and Turkish candies, respectively, because tbh we basically live in separate worlds and there's nothing her-specific I got really buy. Those kinds of gifts are nice because they'll always seem kinda clever, thoughtful, and frankly, exciting, and you can never really screw it up as long as you don't overlook a dietary restriction or some shit. With most gifts, you have to be careful not to get people something they already have, but with foods, it doesn't matter too much because they're consumable.

i love really cute meaningful gifts that have a story behind why they specifically picked this gift. if you have a really good memory with her, try to brainstorm something that can be connected to that moment

@DarlingSelah I tried that. From the most obvious ones (things we had in common) to getting her something I know she'd use and even asking her what she wanted.
On the other hand, she snuck a bigger plushie and hid it for a week right in front of my nose, got some unique chocolate...

Dunno, she spends most of her time in classes, she started dancing lately aaand I haven't seen her for more than a year due to corona, probably.
Even back when we were close she didn't have many hobbies, at least not that I know of.
