What sort of parents would name their daughter Michael?

DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
The same kind that would name a boy Sue! 😈
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@EstrellaStarr the song kind of had a moral. You just don't... "mess around with a man named Sue"! 😊
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@EstrellaStarr It was. When June Carter Cash had his son, he said, "There is one thing I will never do to my son...and that is name him Sue." I forget exactly what it was ...I think John something.
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@MaryJanine I just Googled him. His name is John Carter Cash and he's 49 now.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
Have you ever heard of Michaelene? That is the feminine form of Michael. It could be Daddy or Grandpa had Michael for a first name and insisted the first baby, boy or girl, get that name, and Mama gave in.

Personally, I LIKE the name Michael. When I was born, Daddy insisted I get named for his mother and himself. If I could have picked my own name, it wouldn't be what I was saddled with several decades ago (and no, I won't share it on SW, so please don't ask, everyone.)

I read, not too long ago, where a woman was named "Fairy Ellen Snow"and she has a devil of a time in getting or securing utilities. They think she is crazy. There are worse things than a girl being named Michael.

I often find it peculiar that we have words that often mean nothing in our language in and of themselves and are only intended to be used as labels for people. I also find it peculiar that so many people are so invested in the string of sounds that label a person that they'll argue about what is "right" or "wrong."

We are traditionally labeled at birth so that our parents and others have some means of identifying us, but we are not our names. The only legitimate meaning any name has is the meaning assigned to it by the person it's attached to. And if it really matters to us, we can just pick any collection of sounds we want to our label.
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@DunningKruger Is this a valid answer to my question? It's just a vague philosophical answer that could apply to any question.
rckt148 · 61-69, M
@DunningKruger Michael actually means something
and its very old ,,
But things like that have to mean something to you for them to matter
Names used to say something ,have something specific being said giving a child that name ,many were actually changed by pagans stripping them of the title the name carried
It no longer means anything today ,,its just a name and way to get one childs attention from another ,then saying "Hey you Boy "
But there was a time there was power in a name
It showed who you represent ,,who backs you
Like an Indian showing his scar showing he was a blood brother
That meant "I am not alone "
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@EstrellaStarr I'll admit it's a bit of a tangent.
ozgirl512 · 26-30, F
Ones that can't spell Michelle? 🤔
My mother did [my little sister], but it's spelled differently, and her middle name is Denise.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@DreamyCrush Denise. That is one of my favorite names. I wish one of mine would have been that.

I still don't get calling a girl "james"
SW-User
@EstrellaStarr have you heard of Blake lively, she has a daughter with Ryan Reynolds who is called James, FYI, I also think Blake is a terrible name for a girl ☹️😂
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@SW-User I do know who Blake Lively is and I can't say I care for her name either. I don't know about her home and family life.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@EstrellaStarr Did you ever come across Jamie Sommers (Lindsey Wagner, "The Bionic Woman")?
Where I'm from Michaela is an accepted name.
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@BridgeOvertroubledWaters That is accepted because that "a" on the end makes all the difference. It's like Carla for a female Carl, isn't it?
SW-User
Ones that have been doing too much shrooms? 🤔
Odd coincidence. I was in a meeting today with a woman named Michael (pronounced exactly as you know it). Glad I got that face-to-face introduction, because I completely assumed it was a guy from emails.

Evil parents !
CaptainKirk · 41-45, M
Star Trek ones
[c=#359E00]is it wrong?[/c]
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@CaptainKirk Four-time Best Actress Emmy Award winner Michael Learned was born on April 9, 1939 in Washington, D.C. The oldest of six daughters of a U.S. State Department employee, she was raised on her family's farm in Connecticut. The family moved to Austria when she was age 11, and it was while attending boarding school in England that she fell in love with the theatre and decided to become an actress.
CaptainKirk · 41-45, M
@EstrellaStarr oh, never heard of her
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@CaptainKirk You have now. Lol :)
rckt148 · 61-69, M
Someone who knows the meaning of Michael
and wants their child to have a name to live up to
I think its a cool name
but I know who Michael is
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
hmm sounds odd but I'd think there's probably more to this than meets the eye.. I'd try not to judge until i had all the facts
Maybe no male heirs.
Michael Lerned was a good actress.
There are far worse names.

They are not necessarily bad parents.

Maybe they're setting her up for her sex change when she turns 6y/o🤔🤷‍♂️
Beatbox34 · 31-35, M
Someone who wanted a Michael but he turned to a she.
MaryJanine · 61-69, F
@Beatbox34 Not necessarily - We had a supervisor in our office, who retired when she marries and began having children. Her first daughter was "Lori Ann". The second daughter was "Michaelene Beth". As a little girl, she was called "Micky" by her mother.
I think it’s pronounced differently.
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@Spoiledbrat I don't think so.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
The Learneds.
EstrellaStarr · 36-40, F
@DunningKruger That was who inspired this question, although she's not the only female Michael in existence (apparently one of the Bangles was called Michael Steele).
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
@EstrellaStarr Yes, but Michael Steele chose that name for herself. It wasn't given to her by her parents when she was born.
Catzgano · 31-35, F
Ones that wanted a boy.
