I Hate My Country

I wrote a few days ago about a boat loaded with African immigrants called Aquarius. This boat belongs to a German NGO, picked them very close to the Lybian coast and headed for Italy. Italian authorities did not allow it to access their port, and our stupid Spanish socialist PM offered them the chance to disembark in Valencia, much to the rejoice of the Italian government.

Not only that, they will be given the status of refugees (which they are NOT), which means they will get 500 euro a month for five months, and a work permit.

To add insult to injury, a hotel in Valencia said they will hire twenty of them. I noted down the name of the hotel to make sure I never stay there if I go to Valencia, and I am h
glad to see many talk of boycott them.

But that's not enough. The country should be burning with massive protests. Unemployed people (and there are MANY) should be rioting in the streets. Instead, we will talk about the football/soccer World Cup 馃槱馃槨

Many feel the same way here. Our Prime Minister provides all manner of benefits for refugees including free or subsidized rent; all covered health costs; jobs; gym memberships; counselling; transportation, etc. Meanwhile our citizens are in poor conditions. People who are disabled and on severely limited incomes have to come up magically with money for rehab post-strokes, for out-of-empty-pocket costs for health supplies like splints, crutches, and other equipment. They must choose between buying groceries and paying bills. Their payments do not even cover all their basic bills. I see it daily. And they cannot afford to pay their cells even though they live in the land of freedom and democracy. How about our citizens coming first? That's what I am saying.

@PoetryNEmotion Exactly. Many said here that we were a nation on emigrants, but those who emigrated in the past did not have any welfare in their new countries, paid with citizens' taxes. No free health system or education. And certainly no gym 馃槨

@Cierzo What was the effect of those Spanish immigrants on the native population of South and Central America again? Don't the people who push that line think about that?
CierzoM
@Mugin16 A rational mind would think that, the same way Spaniards brought unknown illnesses in America, Africans may do the same here, so better avoid it

An emotional mind would ignore the fact that many centuries have passed, and talk about karma and such bs.

You know we live in a world where emotional minds rule.

@Cierzo Not just that of course. A rational mind would see how the Spaniards conquered the natives, killed them, enslaved them and genocided them. I visited Argentina. I did not see any natives. Only Europeans who happen to live in South America.

Please note I do not blame the Spaniards. I just point out what happened. From 1821 to 1924, 55 million Europeans crossed the Atlantic. One does not need to be a genius to figure out that this must have had negative effects for the native populations of both North and South America.
CierzoM
@Mugin16 True, but in the case of Argentina it was after their independence when the natives were wiped out.
Mugin1646-50, M
@Cierzo Sure. But did not matter for the natives.
