While home schooling is not for every child or every family, it is quite often very successful. It was successful with our two now adult sons. Insofar as socialization was concerned, a "co-op" of fellow home-schooling families, which included people from all walks of life--university professors, medical doctors, taxidermists, nuclear power plant operators, and more--formed a very eclectic environment in which kids can thrive.
One mom, a theater major back when she was in college, produced "A Tale of Two Cities". It was on par with the local 30,000 population university's theatrical productions! But the cast consisted of kids from age 10-ish to 17... Same with the props manager and crew, and the tech crew.
I will reiterate the caveat that no, not all kids and families will be successful if they home school. But the vast, vast majority do succeed, and more.
