I Have Something I Just Have To Share

Some self righteous people can be so heavenly minded, that they become no earthly good.

It's sad when that happens, I suppose they feel like they've joined some type of elite club and are better than others...people lose their humility sometimes.

@Groofydorkgerdo It wasn't the fact that it was Christian, it's just that the kids acted like it was a social club. Not all of them were that way. She is very narcissistic even now. Going to a "liberal" church now and uses FB to preach to everyone about how to live their life, basically did the same thing all of her life but a different spin on it now.

@cherokeepatti But I have been Christian my whole life and have seen this attitude my whole life.
What we believe and the way people like that great interest are two TOTALLY different things.
Our faith dictates we treat others the exact opposite, to treat others with kindness, compassion, temperance, that sort of thing.

@Groofydorkgerdo I know, I don't go to church, it bugs me. But any time there's a natural disaster or storm victims from hurricanes or other problems arise they are the first to step up and volunteer and donate, so many volunteers from church groups they have to take turns, clothing closets, food pantries, furnishings donated to tiny houses for the homeless, etc. in my city, and they don't question race or ethnic background when they donate. People are learning, this county was number one in federal disaster relief from the govt. but the people have to help each other

I would probably say self righteous people are not heavenly minded at all. They are full of themselves.

I think Jesus was heavenly minded, but he attacked this kind of hypocrisy, and he didn't hold back.

I think about this a lot. I was publicly berated by two members of my former church, who decided between themselves that even though I had not said one word, I was not forgiving enough and didn't have enough humility. They were spot on. I still haven't forgiven either of them, nor the instigator of the trouble, and I no longer attend that church. Why put yourself out there for the a-holes to poop on your head?

@4meAndyou Sorry to hear. I think the wrong person left the church.

The evangelical movement in US grew mostly out of the pietism. As a result there is often an undue emphasis on personal piety and sexual morality, to the neglect of the 'weightier matters of the law... justice, mercy and faithfulness' (Jesus, condemning the self righteous pharisees who 'strain out a gnat and swallow a camel' - sounds like the two you mention, no doubt).

= Social justice (which is a mix of mercy and justice) is viewed with suspicion as, 'the social gospel.'
- Rather than seeking to help the poor, they condemn them =
"They only asked us to condemn the poor, lazy %$# drug addicts living off welfare, the very thing I was eager to do." (many churches)
vs. "They only asked us to be mindful of the poor, the very thing I was eager to do." (Paul)

= Instead of engaging with a needy world to do something, showing compassion, getting alongside the needy, the poor, the downtrodden, the 'sinners' - they have long sermons condemning the unrighteous. (A good signal that the congregation of that church will contain lots of self-righteous people.)

= Politics - don't vote for the person who wants to bring social justice, vote for the guy who claims to be born again, supports abortion repeal and Israel no matter how much they abuse human rights or what they do. The evangelical movement was consciously manipulated to the right in the 1930s by a millionaire who founded 'The Fellowship'. They keep themselves quiet, but it's well documented.

As you can tell, I don't subscribe to this self-righteous version of christianity, with all the characteristics of religion that Jesus criticised vehemently. It certainly doesn't apply to all evangelical churches.

@Abstraction You have so many good and valid points. I did not belong to what is called an evangelical church...but from what my brother tells me (and he belonged to still another variety of church for a time)...there are a lot of control freaks in church. They want to run things, and they want to run YOU, and they're not always very brifht.
