Question about sci fi guns...

...why are they so shit?

If you look at a lot of sci fi guns it becomes apparent that the designers of such weapons were too focused on what is high tech than what's actually effective.

Take the blasters from Star Wars, famous enough right? Their bolts travel at around 75kph

With if we're talking projectile speed? That's shit...honestly lol how does anyone in that universe hope to win a war? Then again, laser swords are a common weapon in the universe (I wonder why)

Any other sci fi weapons that compared to what we have now is terrible?

@Greenbare: The shots still weren't fast...it wasn't about aim or anything, moreso rate of fire...the best way to kill a Jedi is not skill...just to overwhelm their defence.

They were more defence weapons to be fair, the rifle variants tended to be a lot better.

So they shot nukes from their guns? Cool

@Greenbare: "the typical StarWars trooper is a horrible shot." well not really, except for the main characters that have "plot armor" everyone gets murdered pretty effectively by StormTroopers and clones were even more lethal (notice how they killed off almost all the jedi and they didn't have any force powers?). Yes they seem to shoot like blind ferrets when they shoot at any of the heroes but if they didn't it would be a really short movie remember the first mention of stormtroopers in the movie is "only stormtroopers are so precise".
@kayoshin: Plot Armor,, the best ever made!

I know I'm going to regret asking ... But how do you know how fast a "blaster" is???
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Fangirlsarah1996: Wow. Google even knows stuff about things that happened a long, long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?? Google truly knows all. 🤓
Fangirlsarah1996 · 26-30, F
@sarabee1995: Well I used Google to search the shit...but there are people out there you measured how fast the blasters travel in most media Star Wars has been represented.

The figure they came out with was around 75kph
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Fangirlsarah1996: You sure they weren't measuring during a slo mo scene?? 😂🤣😂

Superb question.

A cynic would suggest that its more about what flashes brightly across screen and makes a zapping sound than any utility or physics.

I am not a cynic though. Blasters are awesome. ;-)

@Burnley123: Why didn't The Empire send ANY ships with it?

Like...they had a fleet...they just sent it in without any escort...
kayoshin · 36-40, M
@Fangirlsarah1996: Because the technology in their galaxy already went as far as possible with projectile weapons to which they developed shields that are virtually impenetrable however those shields made the soldier slow in response to that they developed something that would go beyond shields energy weapons. Since the targets were slow the weapons projectiles didn't really need to be fast either. As no one used projectile weapons anymore they stopped making shields against them as well, even the storm trooper armor is mostly designed to distribute the energy of blaster fire so that the soldier gets knocked out instead of killed, they didn't design it to be bullet proof because bullets are almost nonexistent in their time (it's like now people don't really prepare against ballistas and catapults when preparing for siege).
Anyway in case you haven't fallen asleep from all that boring stuff: if the empire would send an army down here we would not fuck them up because they would know we are still using bullet weapons and simply use shields, they'd just have to look up antique weapon plans and build some, they definitely have the resources. We could only fuck them up if we used nukes probably, but also fuck ourselves in the process and the whole planet for a long time. :)

@Burnley123: seems to me to knock out the death star - just poison the food supplies - they have to supply sometime

I think it's because if the weapons are too impressive the movie would be too short
you are SO RIGHT! seeing the lazer blast travel DUHUH
Just use a laser pointer in a smokey room to see what ti would really look like,, and in clear air you would be unlikely to see it at all.
anything slow enough to see travel has little energy in it anyway.
I did like one in the ringworld series,, that used two complimentary ionizing "beams, to hyper charge matter. the two beams strike very next to each other causing the oppositely charged matter to, well tear itself apart.
In Space, you could accelerate mass to really high velocities, impacts start to be titanic. you got to aim with orbital mechanics tho..
laser swords are only common in the least scientific of stories Str WRS is way more fantasy than Scifi,,

First. In the vacuum of space. Regular projectile weapons would be useless.
ReaperofTime · 46-50, M
@Fangirlsarah1996: but not all planets would have suitable conditions.
Niburu · 51-55, M
@ReaperofTime: bullets with an oxidizer in the gunpowder would work quite well, additionally with the external pressure being zero and there being zero atmospheric friction to slow the projectile down it would no doubt have a higher velocity.
@ReaperofTime: actually they WOULD work but yo have to have oxidant, in the casing of the shell.. away from planetary mass, just point and shoot
Near a mass? on an orbit, and that shit will curve...

robbie the robot - shoots out electic bolts
CheshireCatalyst · 36-40, M
There's a star trek movie where they can't kill the borg because they keep adapting to the phasers, but then Picard picks up a tommy gun and nails them with it.

...Just keep using bullets guys.
ichaivalrelic · 26-30, F
Plus the pulse gun sucks in accuracy oh wait that is just the shit training the storm troopers get haha
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
In the case of Star Wars. It was a long time ago. So it's not so good.😉
