It started with the letter "T."

First, athletes and former athletes, followed by sports talk show hosts, started to drop the letter "t" at the end of words. East became eas', next became nex', NFL draft became draf'. (One of the people who does this is an elderly man and his wife is a doctor.)
Now, I just heard a national reporter talking about some states will require citizens to wear "mass."
These are educated people! It makes them sound illiterate. WHY are they doing this? Is this the latest fad?
(Asking for a friend.)

@curiosi Yes! Or, change the "T" to a "K." Walmart becomes WalmarK.

@SW-User I am afraid it is to a few of the locals.

It's part of a downward trend that's been going on for a while.

I can't help but notice how well-spoken everyone once was when I look at old film clips of people being interviewed. Quite a contrast from how it is now.

Language changes constantly and it always has. English for all its rules and grammar is a bastardized creole dumbed down over the years by adults in its long past having to learn it as a second language. Then it was infused with French fully replacing over 40% of its own words.
Many people in the past have felt just as you do today and now these changes are accelerated due to TV and internet.
Certain people have spoken using this pronunciation for a very long time and now all US dialects are merging.
