What is it in 80s cameras that made films look the way they did?

There were different types of film and different ways to develop them to achieve different effects..
I shot 35mm with an SLR..
I also used a very old folding bellows camera like this and got some amazing pictures which I was able to sell..

Just the film tape that made movie's and such. Now they use digital
