Flaws in Prometheus

I can see why some hate this film,

I noticed a random.... curiousity with the story:

The black goop is effectively what helps create the alien worm things, however the same goop completely erodes away at the Engineer in the beginning.

My question is, if the goop completely eats away at almost anything above freezing temperatures, how is it able to create or change anything??????
