I Am Hurting

You remember when you were a kid hearing the saying "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words can never hurt me"? Yeah, seems great. If only it were true. Words can cut deeper than any knife. Words can take your happiness and steal your pride. Words can leave you so damaged that you don't want to wake up the next morning. They can sucker punch so hard you lose your appetite and sometimes your will to live.
That pain can't be caused by people you hate. It's the ones you would give your right arm for that hurt the most. When someone you respect, someone you care for, wields that sword. That's when it hurts the most.
So let's try this on for size, okay? Sticks and stones can only break bones, but words can destroy me.

I think the saying comes from the idea that words only have the power you give them. In the case of a loved one, we tend to give their words a lot of power.
