I Love Abandoned Places

The Palm Tree (Back To The Never Never)... This poem was inspired by a visit to a defunct outback cattle station in the Northen Territories.

I stand here lost in time,
lonely for so long.
The only palm tree amongst gums,
and the stone of a ruined cattle station.
Once I was loved,
in the coolness of the night,
tired cattle hands came and sat near me,
the owner who planted me was full of pride,
as I swayed my soft fronds in the breeze,
a little piece of Queensland,
trapped in the Never Never.
Now I look a little shabby.
Please come near me,I need you so!
And give me a little of that love once lavished.
If you stay here a while,I will tell you a story,
as the wind blows through my heart,
and you will feel a little sad,
when you hear of things long past.
Please don't go!
I see you turn away,listen to the wind,
but you do not listen,you just hear the wind,
and the people who once loved me,
now lay still,only a few yards away,
in a little cemetery.
