Fallout 3 was the first modern fallout game where you aim and shoot etc, probably that one would work well first, then beat new vegas a few times, it's the best one

It depends. Both New Vegas and 3 are pretty good. If you want a game with free mods from new outfits, to absurd amount of rapid fire, to be a playable Deathclaw, then I'd go for Fallout 4. Also, what console do you have?

new vegas is great played a tooooon of it. but its aged a bit. i'd say go with 4 if you just want to have fun. and go with NV if you're willing to work with a janky game for more fun

As most people are saying, New Vegas is probably your best bet. It's a nice mix of the old Fallouts and Fallout 3/4. Make sure you use mods if you are going to play it though. Vanilla NV suffers from a lot of issues such as random stuttering and frequent crashes.
