I want to complain before going to work today.

My job mostly involves driving, which is fine.

The thing I want to talk about is the way my local streets are designed. The traffic lights are not timed — or should I say, they are timed in such a way that drivers end up frequently stopping at red light intersections in repeated succession.

It often becomes a series of waiting at one red light, moving for a very brief period, waiting at the next red light, briefly moving, waiting at the next, etc. etc., at each and every intersection, for miles. Sometimes it's questionable whether one is doing more sitting still than driving.

And to make things worse, other people often drive below the speed limit, side-by-side, taking up the whole road so you can't pass them, which makes each of us even more likely to hit every red light. They don't seem to notice or care.

I understand it may not be a big deal to someone who just has a quick commute from home to work and back, but for me, sitting still in my car and staring at a red light — only to be offered a very brief chance to move through and then stop to wait again at the next light, rinse and repeat — has become a whole lifestyle.

I feel like I'm a slave to traffic lights. It is grueling.

Nothing I can do about it except post online. Maybe get the small satisfaction of being heard and understood.

Off to work soon.
