If i'm honest, it's because they keep moving the goalposts for retirement and pension entitlement.
I HAD hoped to have been able to quit ten years ago.
My job is stressful and exhausting. And i've stuck at it a lot longer than most.
I had planned to quit after 30 years and go and do something that allowed me to use transferable skills but without the 24/7 ,on call, at everyone else's beck and call mentality that exists in my current job.
Add to that these endless periods of boom and bust economic periods that have plagued generation x since we started our working lives and it ensures that many of us will unlikely ever be able to.
