I’ve had over 35 jobs between the ages of 18 and 28

Most people don’t believe me when I tell them this.

They also don’t believe that many minimum wage jobs lie about the whole “don’t burn down bridges you can’t rebuild”

Walmart has rehired me 3 times, Kroger has rehired me 5 times, McDonald’s has rehired me 2 times, Burger King has rehired me twice, Chipotle has rehired me twice, Chili’s has rehired me twice. These are just the companies that have rehired me, I’ve worked for more.

I’ve always known that job seekers had more power than these employers.

That’s not to say I’m encouraging anyone to do what I did but being an alcoholic forced me to sharpen a particular set of skills, especially interview skills, resume and cover letter writing.

There’s a lot of insights into human behavior that I got through all this job hopping.

When I was younger I used to think the grass was always greener on the other side. Well I’ve experimented with that idea over and over again and that wasn’t always the case.

I also picked up on certain social dynamics that tend to occur over and over again regardless of where someone works. It was like I was hitting the reset button every time and I’ve played with the social dynamics differently from time to time, making for a different experience than the last despite being in similar positions.

I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me feel a little less empathetic towards chronic complainers at work or people who complain about not being able to find any work, especially because I’m not at all a good catch. I have 2 DUI’s, no college degree, and no car. I don’t even have references that I can use as vouchers for me when I’m applying for a new job.

When someone says: “This is hard”

I don’t say but I think: “You have no idea”

Of course I’m also not blind to the fact that a lot of what we personally consider difficult has a lot to do with being able reference with our own past experiences. So as much as I feel like rolling my eyes when someone says sweeping popcorn at a movie theater is difficult, I have to realize it’s that persons first and only work experience.

@Lilnonames The worst is when you forget you had worked somewhere and you file your taxes, only to receive another one or two W-2’s in the mail afterwards.
