sometimes i feel like such a loser because in the 30 years at current job i called in sick once
and that was legitimate. like everyone else phones in sick when they are not so why shouldn't i? i guess that makes me a goody two shoe

Nah, it doesn't make you a goody two shoes, it simply means you don't use the system AND you probably had employers who weren't complete asses.
I think in total, I was absent maybe 5 or 6 days (real sick days) in all the years I worked... add in hospital time after an injury in VN. I worked from 16 until 62... do the math 😁
