How do I connect with my manager?

He's always rushing around and mostly says one-word sentences. There's this one employee there who's also his friend, and he's the only person he actually stands around and talks with. It's the only time I don't see him fast-walking and talking business.

I've mostly just been giving him space because I don't want to irritate him. But I want to find a way to get him to like me as an employee or at least communicate that he likes me as an employee.

You want to be actual friends with him or do you want that he likes you as a co-worker?
@Michmich Like I said, as an employee. I want him to trust me.

@SinlessOnslaught Then speaking as someone who manages employees I think that I trust them when they prove that I can rely on them right. Like if they say that they’ll get something done, and then I know that it’ll be great. And that if they get stuck somehow I know that they’ll tell me before wasting time or money. So basically like.. trust comes from proving that you deserve it I think
@Michmich 🤔 Like today when I asked him if I should wait for our coworker to get back before I go on break, or when I asked him for help because I had trouble reading a dipstick?

@Michmich Yay! Thanks!

One last question... Why does he always tell me to run the register when the regular cashier isn't there? 😆 I'm no more qualified than anyone else.

@SinlessOnslaught You should ask him that next time after he asks you to do that and after you’ve done it, lr whenever he compliments you on it
@Michmich Mmmmm I don't want to seem confrontational.

@SinlessOnslaught Ok saying this as a shy person who needs to manage things my top advice is basically that you need to learn the value of confrontation. Like as long as it’s fair right, and constructive. Asking for opinions isn’t confrontational either and asking for a review before it’s that time in the year shows both that you have initiative, that you want to be your best, and that your manager can trust that you’ll get a review even if he might forget to schedule it or something right

Like a good boss tries to make life for the employees easier and a good employee tries to make life for their co-workers and manager easier
@Michmich Hmmmm okay. What do you mean by review, though?

@SinlessOnslaught Like asking for the managers opinion on how you’re doing, what you’re doing great, what you can do better etc
@Michmich Ohhhh I see. Thanks!
