I wouldn't say that generally a retail job is awful work. I think it depends on several factors. What kind of work is it? Register, stocking shelves, janitor? What are the bosses like?
I worked at walmart for 5 years. I did many jobs there, but I think the one I enjoyed the most was bicycle assembly. I was in the back all day, away from rude customers, but, the pay wasn't so great. And after 5 years, I went and found a better paying job, however, I actually had benefits, but it was standing all day, stacking boxes onto pallets. You were required to get 550 boxes stacked per hour. Then it changed to 650. Oh and you had to get 100% or more for the end of each week. The boss was an a-hole, if you got a 70% on monday, and 100% tues-fri, and your end of week was 100%, you'd still be berated over the 70% you got on monday.
I would have to say that, stacking the boxes job, was pretty awful. But the pay was good, and I got benefits. Some people love retail work. Maybe for a part time thing it might not be too terrible, but I don't think I'll ever work in a fulfillment center ever again. Most of those places now are standing for 10 hours a day. I work a sit down job now. And it's pretty awesome. But, some people think it's an awful job. One person's awful, could be another persons incredible.

@twiigss Sure. I think it's mostly about the relationship of customers to customer service staff (retail, waiting tables, whatever) and the abuse they can suffer from both customers and management with no real form of protection.
The jobs can be good, I've worked a till and loved it because it was a good place and I enjoyed the vibe. But I shop somewhere most days and I get a dead-eyed stare from someone being fake happy 90% of the time, so i try to be extra kind to them.

It's not awful. I'm living the dream working for Kroger 🙂 a completely selfless company who values each and every associate 🙂

@deadgerbil Having good colleagues to hang out with is the only thing that makes a lot of work bearable lol

Without service workers, who would the rest of abuse to feel like we have power for a few minutes a day?
hunkalove · 61-69, M
@SW-User Would you like fries with that?

Everyone should spend at least a year working retail AND in restaurants.

@ginnyfromtheblock Indeed. And what could be better?
CountScrofula · 41-45, M
@ginnyfromtheblock For real I'm now training a friend to organize her restaurant. It's awesome.
Andromedanian · 22-25, M
Wish more people would think that way, am in a different but similar line of business and even thought the benefits make it realtively worth it, it's still hella stressful dealing with very frustrated rude people every so often
SinlessOnslaught · 26-30, M
I just spent my day kissing customers' asses even more than usual, it was insane, so I appreciate that. 😆

Thanks. I’ve worked in both retail and restaurants. Many customers are great, but there are some that insist on looking down on you no matter what

Home depot workers can fuck right off. Idc, they're universally useless

Restaurant work has better drugs and a drinking culture. Which kicks it up a notch from retail.
