What do you do when your work ethic interferes with other workers?

I actively seek out customers who need help. I'm the only person in my department who does. I'm sure my coworkers and managers talk about me behind my back because I'm new. That means if I help a customer, my colleagues might have to help me help them. I can see them nearly run away when they hear me greet people.

I want customers to like me but I also don't want to get fired because my manager hates me like my last decent job.
