Do you work better with or without a deadline?

I have to have a deadline or else it won't be done until sometime next year, at the earliest.

My professor often said that you might have to overdo things, which means that generally spoken you'd either overdo things after a deadline or simply without a deadline. I'd rather choose no deadline.

Best to have a goal, but it's got to be realistic.
