People who work from home: how does the job know you're actually working?

Do you have to hit a button on the computer every 30 minutes to prove you didn't leave or what?

I have to work from home a few days, but not yet. And it's got me wondering.

I don't want to ask the manager "so how will you know I'm working"

Do you use instant messaging? That typically has a status.

If you have to VPN to get into work. They can probably tell how much input/output you have.

It's different for me because I can do a lot of work through virtual machines (I have a three hour process going right now) and it won't show any activity on the VPN.

Just be responsive when an email, VM, or text comes in.
