Is talking smack to co-workers on the job a cop out since it's a non-violent civilized atmosphere where people are afraid of losing their job?

It's risky. You could be reported to management for harassment or using threatening language. It's not worth it honestly. Just settle your differences outside of work if absolutely unavoidable and necessary.
