Employee calls boss to ask for this week's hrs. Boss hangs up, then..

Employee texts for the hrs the next day, and gets a cryptic 'see you at the grill on Friday' response. Employee texts back twice to ask whether he was to work on Wed or Thu, with no response.

I'm assuming the employee does the payroll and the boss is paid hourly or daily and isn't exempt?

If the above is the case, and he hasn't turned in his hours/days worked, treat him the way you would any other employee that doesn't turn in their hours. No paycheck. He only has himself to blame. You have his obnoxious responses in texts to back you up if he pitches a fit.

@SW-User I think she means he was trying to get his schedule for the week. I could be wrong! Lol

@SW-User The employee is trying to find out what hours the boss wants him to work, because it keeps changing. The boss is the one refusing to communicate. And it's casual labour so it won't be covered by labour laws.

@purplepen makes sense. That seems very strange.

@JaggedLittlePill You're probably right. I'm very tired. I read that the boss refused to give work hours. But, just reread based on what you said and it sounds as if the boss hasn't scheduled him. He sounds like a jerk and your response is spot on. If there's an HR dept, he should report the boss. either way, he needs to find another job.

@SW-User Thx for the comments. I think the boss is being a jerk by refusing to communicate better.

@purplepen The boss sounds like he's a control freak and gets off on messing with people because he knows he can get away with it.

Tell the guy to find another job and not quit this one. When the boss finally calls him, he can say he thought from the lack of response that he was laid off so he found another job. He'll leave the boss in a spot having to find someone else to cover. Maybe it'll teach the boss a lesson.

@SW-User He might end up doing that. Thx for the suggestion.
