Is the stress of software maintenance worth the money you'd earn?

Like, you might earn lots for maintaining software which would include annoying costumers though.

From 1981 to 2018 I worked in IT.
Early career was in sw dev and support.

I loved creating new solutions. But also tracking and fixing issues. One job I had in in the mid 80s involved dealing room systems..
There was a notorious bug where a line of information disappeared. No one could trace it. It was given to me. I spent all afternoon just trying to recreate it. About 4pm I got it. So started to figure out why. By 6pm I could recreate it repeatedly. By 8pm I found the actual problem, it was in C it was a quirk of pointers and an array I think. By midnight I had a fix but that caused another issue. About 4am I had it done all included and sufficient test cases executed. I slept in the conference room for a few hours.

When everyone arrived in the office at 9am I showed them. We sent the patch to customers that afternoon and I got a small bonus in my pay packet.

A small career highlight.

No amount of money is worth being unhappy.

@dinonuggies I think that thinking of yourself isn’t selfish. Be happy then make others happy.

Now my disclaimer... if there’s no one else with the skills to cure cancer or something like that then by all means, make the sacrifice.
