Do people on your job only seem to want to engage in a silly conversation?

For saying stuff just for the sake of saying it and not for any real meaning or connection. People don't seem to like thoughtful conversations just a bunch of silly stuff.

I am very observant. My co-workers, whom i share an open office with, talk outloud to themselves, and/ or about what they're doing so that other co-workers can chime in and make a conversation out of it. I find it weird.

I cant even explain how weird it is. As soon as it is quiet for like 2 minutes, people say " uh its so quiet" as if quietness hurts their ears.

Sometimes, during lunch break. People seem to feel that they have to talk about something when they're together, or they'll feel awkward. I've been eating alone most days lately, which has been kind of a relief.

I can relate to this. I tend to not have much, if anything, to add to those conversations. They're just noise, with no purpose other than to avoid awkward silences.
