How do you maintain a work ethic while depressed?

I'm generally pretty industrious, but I'm struggling a little currently.

I know I'm not performing at my best and it has me feeling kinda lousy.

Respectful answers only, please!
When I don’t want to get in gear and do something, I think of how I can reward myself afterwards. That gets me motivated and I do what needs to be done, anxious to get the reward. lol. It works! Then I feel proud of myself when it’s done.
@YourBuddyRandall Actually anything that makes you happy and feel productive. You get to choose what makes you happy. It's actually fun, like a game. That's the fun of it, as well. Give it a try. Always works for me. Maybe it's something like rewarding yourself with a bowl of ice cream, or a chocolate candy bar, or buying a book or movie you like. You can be creative.

@LadyGrace That sounds like a good idea! Thanks!
@YourBuddyRandall you can even distract your self for quite a long time by doing something you've never done before, like trying your hand at painting . No one says you have to be perfect or even good at it. But it's wonderful to play around with it and have the pleasure of just doing it. Or you could decide to paint a room in the house or redecorate your bedroom , or learn to play guitar. It's even super great and makes you feel wonderful, when you can go out and help other people. A lot of people out there are very lonely and would love the chance to have someone to talk to, or visit a nursing home and read to people or even sing to them. figure out what your talents are. Everyone has something and you never know what people like, so never underestimate your talents in helping someone. The most wonderful feeling in the world is when you help people and give of your self. Never think you are unimportant. There's always something one can do to help another person. Little things mean a lot! Make a cake and take to your neighbor or friend. Ask someone if they need you to get groceries for them. Visit an animal shelter and play with a lonely animal. Help someone who needs a lift somewhere. Many seniors need help, too. They are thrilled just to have someone to talk to in many cases.

I don’t have an answer really but kudos to you for seeking help. If at all possible please consider professional assistance because it really is hard to be industrious when you’re feeling that way.

@dreamsicle What's your hourly rate? ;)
dreamsicle · 46-50, F
@YourBuddyRandall If I thought I could do you any good, I’d be free.

@dreamsicle I'm sure you're a good ear, Dreamy. ❤️

I know it’s difficult to do that with your frame of mind. But try not to put too many expectations on yourself. Take it one day at a time, & do your best to flush out negative thoughts. I know it’s easier said than done. 💜

@YourBuddyRandall I don’t expect that you’re feeling your usual type A, & that’s ok.

@marsbar You're sweet! Thank you! 🤗

@YourBuddyRandall Any time 🤗

The blocker is the desire to feel good before being able to work. The other way to approach work is to expect it up be a fucking awful experience and make a game out of how shitty it's gonna feel. A bit masochistic but that's how the toughest people do it - just take a bite out of shit sandwich and smile while you chew
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@plungesponge Fall in love with the process, even when it hurts. That makes sense! I guess the greats had days when they were down too!
I am going through the same thing. I am in a very deep depression right now. I have zero motivation to do anything. I wish I knew how to help you but right now I can't help myself.

@GoldButterfly PM me if you ever need to vent.

Take advantage of your youth and keep yourself motivated , just imagine reaching your goals and how happy that will make you . Everyone makes mistakes and you'll learn from them .

25 is really young , people your age are still in community college trying to figure out what they want to be . Just keep trying and never give up . It will happen and you will thrive . @YourBuddyRandall

@SW-User Thank you! I genuinely appreciate that perspective.
@YourBuddyRandall Ah, welcome to the club. I didn't have it all together at your age, either. Not many do! You know, just visiting a friend and talking things out in person or by phone, does wonders!! It does for me, even at my age. It's really great therapy. Very refreshing.

I would say try to break it into as manageable chunks as you can (if that makes sense - it may not, I'm a little tired). See if you can find ways to provide incentives for depressed you to continue work even if you're not feeling it. Harder said than done maybe. I have heard that if you leave off work at a spot where you know what the next step should be, then it is easier to get back to working on it and getting back in the groove.

Since you're able to recognize when you're depressed, try to take it easy on yourself even if you don't meet the productivity you're aiming for. You'll bounce back later.

I hope I'm not giving bad advice. ._.
YourBuddyRandall · 26-30, M
@DDonde That's really good advice! Thanks for it.

Knowing you're depressed is half the battle. So I guess I just have to be gentle to myself.
@YourBuddyRandall Absolutely! Don't be too hard on yourself at those times, but do, do something creative. even if it is just one very small thing like getting the dishes done or cleaning your room, all that adds up to give you more self-esteem and confidence and it truly does help if you practice that each day. Just do one thing a day and then pretty soon you'll be able to do two things a day. I've been there and done that and even though I had to force myself, it pulled me through , plus prayer. is very very powerful. go to YouTube and find things that make you laugh and things that motivate you and watch videos where people have succeeded in overcoming hard things. Tony Robbins is an excellent motivator and there are many others . during this time, try to keep a positive attitude by watching things on YouTube that are motivational and keeps your spirit up. get your mind involved in a hobby you are interested in. Watch the movie called Rudy. It will motivate you. You got this!! Never give up!! Look up Noah Elkrief online. He tells you how to get rid of depression and anxiety.
