Why do employers make you send a resume, when they will also make you fill out an online application?

You stress out over making your resume perfect, but then for every job you’re really interested in, you have to do an online application anyway. (Don’t get me started on those goddamn online applications.) It seems like a lot of wasted effort.

I suspect with so many 'tools' for CV compiling out there it doesn't really help an employer when trying to sort the 'wheat from the chaff' in terms of finding the best person for the job.

This is why you find "Tell us something about a situation you handled in a work environment...." questions on an application form.
They want to see if you can apply procedure and logic to a problem and produce a successful outcome.
