How much are you willing to work?

One of my employees has voiced an interest in another position, actually a management position that opened up. I told him it might be a good fit for him. This despite giving him a 50% rating last year. Actually, part of me would rather see him move on so I don't have to deal with him anymore.

I know the person in the position currently (she's leaving end of month) and she probably averages 10-12 hour days. She's a good manager. In reviewing the position with him, I asked him how hard he's willing to work.

His reply: 80%.

Explains a lot.

He doesn't want to work and should be in entry level positions.. that person has No ambition whatsoever and probably watches the clock all day until he can leave... He'd be a useless manager

@SW-User sometimes smart but lazy people make excellent managers. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem smart.

@SW-User He had the cushiest position previously as a consultant, then hired on at an execs insistance. Rumor is because he was doing things like setting up an execs home wireless and the execs kid's Xbox.

2017 they re-organized and moved him into IT support reporting to me. I could never get him to document or vocalize how much time he spent in his previous role, he just kept saying it was "important". I have someone else doing the same thing he used to do only part time (maybe 10%).

He's really just an over-glorified admin. A very well paid admin.

@JohnYahYah He's certainly in over his head. Actually, I don't know what expertise he has, that's part of the problem here.

@TamAngel I bet if he interviewed for his own job today, he'd not get hired, by the sounds of things he most likely needs to be sidelined and pushed out

The 50% rating you gave him last year is unacceptable tbh if he's getting very well paid. There are good people who would work harder for less

@SW-User I'm curious why her 50% rating was effectively ignored by management. Perhaps this guy isn't the primary problem, the company culture is.

@JohnYahYah It was not ignored, it's a low rating, but we like to review if we can find them something more suited to their expertise rather than just boot them out.

@TamAngel I guess I'm not used to your company's percentage rating system. To me, "50%" sounds abysmally bad, like a failing grade, but maybe it just means low-average to your company?

@JohnYahYah It's below average and corresponds to the % of pay with bonus, but I didn't give him a pay increase, he didn't deserve it.
