What should I do career wise?

NOTE: I am asking this question again because I got some trolls on the last post, and I really could use some advice.

So, I quit my job because it has just been way too stressful. Problem is, I am almost 20 with little work experience, no specific major, and all my interests are way hard to find a career in. (Theatre.) My family is very supportive and wants me to follow my dreams, but my friends think I should focus on getting work experience and picking a major just to be sure I'll have a future. I know I'll need a set career eventually, but I really do not want to be stuck with a career that I hate. The only thing I am one-hundred percent sure of at the moment is that I need a break over the holidays to sort some things out. But, I need some serious advice: What should I do?

Hey, I've struggled a lot with this. Somehow, kids and young adults from many places around the world are expected to know exactly what they want from life, without ever trying much of anything in regards to work/career fields. The best way to go about it is to experience, allow yourself time to try different things, and don't expect everything to work out perfectly. You'll have to start in less important roles and work your way up, but that doesn't necessarily mean you have to stay in the same field throughout your entire working career. Often, people's college majors have little to do with the field of work they chose. You have more options than you might realize. Just try a job, try something you might have even a hint of liking, something you could learn. Make every opportunity a learning experience, no matter what the pay of the job is. Just keep moving forward. Slowly you'll gain references, you can experiment with different jobs, and you can decide what's best for you. If you try something you never thought you'd like, you may be surprised at what you can adapt to, and learn to love.

I am working on a BA in English. I've worked a lot of retail and customer service jobs, which I loathe, but I've found I really like the trades arena, if only for the work atmosphere. The work is straightforward, the communication is straightforward, and the people who work there (mostly men, in a male-dominated field) are typically working-class, and are much more open-minded and laid-back than, say, staff at a legal firm. So. Start somewhere, find what you like, try to learn as much as you can, and keep looking until you find something you can excel in. You might be pleasantly surprised.
