Why would a company call and reject you when they can just send an email?

Is this common? Especially after the first round interview?

I interviewed 1.5-2 weeks ago. I sent an email asking for the outcome of my interview. I received a voicemail (missed the call) from the company saying they are ringing to give me the “feedback” of my interview. My application status hasn’t changed online. I’m trying to be positive because I won’t know until Monday now. But would they be that awkward to reject me over the phone? It has to be good news right? Otherwise it is just awkward.

Any thoughts?

@sighmeupforthat in what way? Sending rejection emails is efficient. Not a phone call.
