Maybe he spent too much time in the USA? I've had that a lot over there. It seems like "How are you?" is more like a "good day" and people look weird when you answer it like a question instead of just repeating it back.

maybe that's his way of saying hi without expecting a response. he's probably on his forum ranting about how awkward you are for responding
