Why are people like this?

First, the backstory:

Today, I noticed that the department across from me was missing a worker. I figured they had a call-off. Soon, that department's gossip and all-around troublemaker came to me and said the woman I saw missing had quit. That was the assumption, as this was her second no-call, no-show. Later in the day, I heard the troublemaker, the department manager, and the assistant department manager laughing loudly and causing a disruption. The assistant manager said, "Well, too bad for you; she's quit." I was confused about how that was my issue. Then the troublemaker told me they were laughing because they were trying to get ahold of the woman who quit. Only for her to text the department head saying:

You treat your assistant better than anyone. She comes in late. No big deal, calls off, no big deal. Anyone else does that, and you are on us hardcore. I am quitting because you and your assistant bullied me nonstop. I spoke with you crying, and all you did was laugh and say I was being irrational, emotional, etc. I went to the owner, who then asked me if I had spoken up to you. I'm done.

I put it in bold as it was texted that way. All three of the people who saw the message have a copy. The Department head has the original; the assistant and Troublemaker have forwarded copies. All three think it's funny that this woman was driven to quit. They made fun of her height, etc. As I was walking away, they were talking about how they knew I wanted to "F**k her." They are now short-staffed and, while asking for sympathy, attack this woman and others.

What the fuck kind of soul crushing ass place is that? This is why I despise clique type behavior. There's no reason that a workplace should feel like highschool or a shitty remake of mean girls with c list stars trying to "burn" everyone 🙄

@DancingStarGoddess That describes them to a T. Trust me, I've been looking for something better for a while. My department is not like that. I feel bad for the woman who quit because she was very sweet and kind. These women push all the good people out.
