Feeling Rather Unappreciated At Work
I’ve been with this company for 7 years, and overall it’s been a great experience—especially in the early years when we had strong managers. One thing this company does is rotate managers between stores to “help out,” and while I understand the reason behind it, I don’t particularly like it. Over time, we lost both our Store Manager and our Shift Manager. The Shift Manager we had at the time was amazing, and although she was replaced by someone older with a very different personality, she eventually proved herself. She may have had her quirks, but she always showed respect, and over the 4 years we worked with her, we came to value her.
Our Store Manager position, however, kept changing. At one point, we got a manager I didn’t initially get along with—he rubbed me the wrong way from the start—but I’ll admit he highlighted areas we thought were fine but really weren’t, and he got things in order. He’s since moved to another role, and now we’ve got a new Store Manager who’s just learning the ropes, having never worked for this company before.
On top of that, we’ve had a new Shift Manager for nearly 2 months now. To put it bluntly, he hasn’t been well received. He carries himself with a sense of superiority, clearly plays favorites, and often ignores some staff while acknowledging others in the same room. The biggest issue I’ve noticed, though, is the complete lack of fairness when it comes to recognizing workers’ efforts.
There’s an award called “Profit Protection Champion,” and the same person has already won it twice. That bothers me, because I strongly believe that once someone has received recognition in a particular category, they shouldn’t be awarded it again—it’s simply unfair. With over 200 staff members, it’s not like there aren’t plenty of people doing a good job. I know I am. I rarely “toot my own horn,” but I also know when something isn’t right. Past managers clearly thought highly of my work since they gave me a contract.
The reality is, my role is heavily affected by the time of day. I work mornings, when theft attempts are less frequent, but I still catch them from time to time and always report them. This other person works afternoons and evenings, when theft is more common. That shouldn’t automatically make them more deserving—it’s the managers’ responsibility to level the playing field. Even my partner, who is a manager at another location, thinks it’s unfair that this person has been given the same award again.
When I check the logs, I can see that I’m trying my best to catch just as many thefts as they are. But when I report them, all I get is a shrug or a quick “nice.” When they report one, managers make a huge deal out of it—taking photos, publicly congratulating them, and posting about how great they are. It’s disheartening, and honestly, it makes me feel like crap.
This particular group received the award, but they made it seem like everyone relied on this one particular person—as if I’ve been useless and haven’t contributed at all. But who do they go to when someone is acting suspicious? Who do they rely on for the logs? Who do they call when security needs to be involved? Who do they depend on to check purchases? It’s certainly not just that one person, they rely on me as well. I work nearly every day (Monday-Friday)
I’m really not happy with how this is being handled. I know I’m doing my best, and I won’t let anyone diminish that—but I’ll admit, it’s been tough.
