Work Mentor #1
I'd just started my career in sales. This Nigerian-British sales manager was the most dynamic and energetic guy I'd ever met. You'd have to personally see it.
Bashing his fist on the table, standing up while dancing around when closing a deal on the phone and his objection handling...... wow....... Caller: "Not having it." Him: "Look as it's only X amount I'm sending it to you anyway" Another caller: "Sorry I'm driving." Him: "Pull over, I'll wait". "Maybe" potential customers- "You're here, I'm here let's do this"
My first session with him when I joined the company. I was cold calling and he kept whispering into my ear what to tell potential customers who had objections. I took him by surprise though as I was on the phone to a Nigerian potential customer and there was a movie package and I told the man "Sir, do you watch Nigerian movies? I love the Mount Zion ones myself." The sales manager (mentor) slid back in his chair, laughing so hard he had tears coming down his eyes. How did I white guy like myself know about Nigerian Christian movies?
Friday group sessions with him were the treat of the week. He came in in his flash suits with a swag and removed his shades. He listened to our calls and reviewed them in his own.... unique.... way.
He reviewed Ben's. He said to Ben "use that bass in your voice!" He then imitated Ben's accent while shouting: "USE THAT BASS!" 🤣
My go- he listened to my calls and said "BFA you're not pushing enough." He then told me to flex my shoulders and shout as loud as I can! In front of the group🤣
A great guy and remembering his energy still helps me on bad workdays today.
