Ever paid a coworker to cover your shift?

A place I worked had an unofficial sick rota in the manuafacturing part. Everybody got 24 days sick pay a year, but if someone was sick they called in someone off-shift to cover, at 1.5x normal pay. Everyone was calling in sick, so that somebody else got the overtime. The managers wanted to sack the people involved, but it was too widespread. The company would have closed down

Never! I worked too many overtime shifts - some on Christmas for what amounted to triple time and a half - to even consider it.

We don't do that. Because we cover for each other by tradition when needed.

But it's courtesy to offer a treat. Coffee or lunch.

I get night duty money and wanted to swap a night for a day shift. Swapped with a freelancer who doesnt get night duty payments and gave him the payment as it can be a pig of a shift.
