Colt Gray’s father enters GA court for sentencing

Colin Gray, whose son killed four people at Apalachee High School in 2024, was convicted of murder and manslaughter earlier this year after buying his son an AR-15-style rifle as a Christmas gift and leaving it unsecured — despite warnings his son was a danger to others.

His trial was part of a broader push to hold accountable the parents of juvenile mass shooters. He is the first parent of a school shooter to be convicted of murder.

Colt Gray was recently sentenced to life imprisonment in the same courtroom.

James and Jennifer Crumbley were each sentenced separately to 10 to 15 years in prison following their convictions of involuntary manslaughter.

Good. It’s about damned time.

I found out recently that the parents of Isaiah Shoels (the sole black Columbine victim) sued the parents of Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, whom they maintained committed a hate crime in the murder of their son. Witnesses stated that one of the killers said "where’s the little n*****? “ before finding and shooting him. The suit was settled out of court, but many of the other parents criticized the Shoels for bringing it. 😞

@MoveAlong …and common sense gun control laws are simply so simple, so logical, and would save so many lives…

But Republicans just don’t feel like men unless our homes, lives, schools, and work places are flooded with assault weapons and large capacity magazines and ICE thugs are armed and unsupervised…

Just saw the verdict. 15 years. Criminally culpable. 2nd degree murder.
And not just life imprisonment for the shooter. No parole. He's going to die in prison.
This is about sending a message. Hope they did.

@Ynotisay AFAIK, there is no evidence that tough sentences for mass murderers has ever prevented a mass shooting.

In fact, in a large percentage of these cases, the perpetrator(s) end up shooting themselves or die in a shoot out with law enforcement.

Prevention requires keeping these weapons out of the hands of the shooters in the first place. Hence: strong, common sense gun control laws!

@KunsanVeteran See this is the problem. I brought up the concept of individuals pulling triggers and what that means you just didn't want to hear that. I even said we need to end the gun fetish. But the knee jerk reaction, around this and a WHOLE lot of issues in this country, is to blame others. Typically the government. It's like the people who do these things aren't culpable. Personal responsibility is off the table. We look for band aids in this country for after the fact but just don't get to the root cause. And the reason that it's easier to point fingers. Fixing "why" these things happen is hard. And that's not our lane.

@Ynotisay I agree that we need to hold the perpetrators responsible. What’s more, we need to do a whole lot better and devote more resources to identifying especially young people who might be future offenders. Get them the mental health care they need and make certain that they cannot get guns—especially assault weapons.

But we need common sense measures to keep guns out of the hands of unstable people because having tough sentences does not really deter unstable, troubled potential shooters. Few, if any, countries make it as easy to get a gun (legally or otherwise) as the USA and few, if any, other countries have such a big school/mass shooting problem.
