I think it’s likely true that the father was involved in helping identify or turn in the suspect, but the idea that the killer “confessed to his father” in a full, formal, legal sense, or that the father “held him” until police arrived, is probably a simplification or compression of what’s being reported. That’s how news often works: nuance gets lost.
