It's so Mario could be relatable to a wider audience.. a Japanese plumber isn't common.. and according to google there is a shortage of plumbers in Japan.

I'd expect the low res graphic capabilities played a part when they first create mario.

It had to appeal to a mostly English speaking international audience. So it had to to have an easily pronounced and relatable name.

That's my guess anyway.
I'm pretty sure he's perpetually 40.
