Mario is 40

Nintendo sent an email letting me know that Mario is 40 years old and it got me wondering why they choose an Italian to be their mascot?
Isn't he a plumber as well?
Seems kind of odd a selection for a Japanese game no?
Why not a Japanese plumber?

It's so Mario could be relatable to a wider audience.. a Japanese plumber isn't common.. and according to google there is a shortage of plumbers in Japan.
I'd expect the low res graphic capabilities played a part when they first create mario.

It had to appeal to a mostly English speaking international audience. So it had to to have an easily pronounced and relatable name.

That's my guess anyway.
I'm pretty sure he's perpetually 40.

Because the Japanese worship white people.
